Let's Talk About Talking

YOUTH EXCHANGE

21-29 July 2023

Jastrzębia góra, Poland

In July 2023, Jastrzębia Góra, Poland, hosted the youth exchange project “Let’s Talk About Talking,” funded by the European Commission. This project marked almost two decades since the first posts on Facebook and Twitter, during which time social media, globalization, and the COVID-19 pandemic have drastically changed the way young people communicate. Research shows that many young people prefer online interactions and expressing emotions through emojis rather than face-to-face conversations. This trend has led to a decline in the ability to construct coherent and complete verbal expressions. Recognizing the importance of verbal communication for personal and professional success, the project aimed to address these challenges.

About the Project

The Importance of Verbal Communication

Verbal communication, especially face-to-face interactions, plays a crucial role in personal and professional life. It enhances soft skills, boosts self-confidence, and can significantly influence career advancement. Understanding the barriers to communication and learning how to overcome them is essential. The project aimed to help participants recognize and address these barriers, improving their ability to communicate effectively and listen actively.

Participating Countries

Six countries participated in the project:

  • Platforma Integracji Młodzieży (Poland)

  • Lenduletes Fiatalok Egyesulet (Hungary)

  • Keep the Change (Latvia)

  • PLANBE PLAN IT BE IT (Cyprus)

  • STUDENT ERA (Slovakia)

  • High on Life (Italy)

Each country was represented by a group of participants aged 18-26, along with a team leader. The groups aimed for gender balance to ensure an inclusive environment.

Project Goals

The “Let’s Talk About Talking” project aimed to:

  • Raise awareness of global communication issues and effective coping strategies.

  • Highlight the importance of physical activity for health, well-being, and building relationships.

  • Promote a healthy approach to environmental, cultural, and social pressures.

  • Increase self-awareness and improve soft skills such as communication, teamwork, and relationship-building.

  • Enhance fitness and introduce various physical activities.

  • Improve language skills and foster intercultural understanding.

Activities and Schedule

The project included a mix of educational workshops, integrative activities, cultural evenings, and visits to local towns. Workshops were conducted both by invited specialists and participants, focusing on informal education principles such as needs assessment, exercise objectives, discussion, and reflection.

To sum up

The “Let’s Talk About Talking” youth exchange provided participants with invaluable skills and experiences. By focusing on the importance of verbal communication and physical activity, the project aimed to equip young people with the tools they need for personal and professional success. Participants left with a deeper understanding of themselves and the ability to make a positive impact in their communities.
